Job Summary
The Clinical Informatics Consultants (CIC) are senior level positions within Burwood filled by individuals who have held senior leadership positions as Nursing Informaticists, Clinical Informaticists, Director/Manager, or Consultant directly in healthcare. The CIC will work with our clients in a variety of capacities to help them increase the value of the HIT infrastructure and supporting organizations.
The Clinical Informatics Consultant (CIC) is an expert in human factors, patient safety, and the use of technology to optimize care delivery processes and effectively communicate patient care activity. The CIC specializes in patient care processes and clinician workflow and leads initiatives to promote effective process design, development, implementation, integration, and adoption of the Electronic Medical Record and other technologies. The CIC is responsible for assuring clinician involvement in evaluation of new technology design and function in each engagement. The CIC will act as a HIT liaison between the information technology department and the clinical leadership. As well, this role supports physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other clinicians as the resource for requests related to technology changes throughout the lifecycle of the engagement. The CIC demonstrates independent decision making as appropriate in evaluation of requests for system and/or process improvements and determines feasibility and advisability of change. The CIC works closely with client clinicians, departmental leadership, Quality, Patient Safety and Accreditation and Licensure Departments and Information Technology staff to clarify needs, prioritize requests, recommend technology design, workflow and execute change and adaptation to the EMR and other technology.
Additionally, the CIC will play a critical internal role at Burwood Group in furthering the advancement of the HIT practice. This will include evaluation of new strategies, internal training and documentation development, and architecting comprehensive clinical solutions. The CIC will also take part in the overall HIT marketing and national engagements to further Burwood Groups focus and commitment to the HIT landscape and interoperability initiatives.
IT Operational Excellence Clinical Informatics Consultants professional competencies include but are not limited to the following:
- Client Focus: Utilizes talents, skills, and knowledge in all assignments for the purpose of leading, guiding and directing the delivery of excellent system selection, design, implementation, adoption, and support. Guides preparation and delivery of client service by seeking a thorough understanding of client mission, goals, and values.
- Business and Clinical Knowledge: Understands the business and clinical processes of healthcare organizations and the operational environments of assigned clients. Advocates the effective use of HIT to improve administrative processes and patient care through high quality, cost effective solutions. Provides leadership and guidance to IS and cross-functional teams to achieve quality outcomes.
- Account Relationship and Management, Personal Organization and Adaptation: Responds thoroughly and promptly to client needs as defined in conjunction with our clients. “Owns” client relationships and follows issues through to closure. Provides education to clients on HIT processes. Adapts well to rapid change and multiple priorities. Seeks to improve talents and skills consistent with overall Burwood Group strategy.
- Systems Management and Competency Understanding: Maintains solid project management and technical competence for assigned client systems while grasping the integration and interaction of all supported systems. Consistently manages technology in support of client goals.
- Team/Interpersonal: Effective team member player and decision maker. Uses Burwood Group quality management and problem management tools to effectively and consistently guide/make decisions. Communicates clearly, responsively, and purposely with clients and team members. Works effectively with various personalities and roles within and outside Burwood. Focuses on overall team success and promotes collaborative achievements. Shifts easily among different technical and project roles as required by situation. Often manages multiple projects concurrently. Is comfortable communicating and interacting with all levels, including executive level.
IT Operational Excellence Clinical Informatics Consultants responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Management of all types of HIT projects. Prepare project plans, accurately estimate project timeframes and resource requirements (both personnel and budget). Identify required skill sets, obtain project and resource allocation approvals, and assign project tasks ensuring both successful task completion and staff development. Produce project status reports. Manage the project team, including clients, partners, and Burwood Group consultants,
- Responsible for working with project teams to ensure that established design and quality standards are maintained. Review project team techniques and ensure that Burwood Group guidelines are followed for; system and integration testing; user and operations documentation; and user and operations training.
- Responsible for providing the highest level of technical, analytical, and clinical expertise required to support the development, implementation, and ongoing utilization of application systems. Provide expertise in problem determination, evaluation, and solution development.
- Understand the current business and clinical operations of the client departments. Work with client departments, analysts, and partner representatives to select, configure, and implement and support effective system solutions.
- Ensures appropriate support documentation is completed and available. Provides leadership in support of installed systems to ensure that they continue to meet client objectives.
- Establishment and maintenance of a positive working relationship with clients. Provide quality client service. Manage client expectations, ensuring their understanding of the HIT systems and the impact on their department and the rest of the healthcare organization.

- Participates in improvement projects and on committees/workgroups both externally and internally to provide content expertise on the literature related to the use of the EMR, Barcode Point of Care and other technology to meet patient safety goals, support clinician workflow, and achieve care improvements.
- Thought leader and resource for client clinicians on the clinical information system and patient care processes to promote optimal care, reduce errors, and achieve organizational goals.
- Participates in development, monitoring and evaluation of technology and decision support (barcode point of care, care coordination, rules, order sets, etc.) for continuous improvement both external for clients and internal for Burwood Group.
- Problem solves application and workflow issues and works through barriers to achieve results by collaborating effectively with clients, partners, and Burwood consultants.
- Communicates effectively with all members of the Burwood and client healthcare delivery team, leadership, Informatics committee members, and the information technology departments.
- Accountable for measurable improvements in client satisfaction with technology, and in the use of technology as a facilitator of best practices, patient safety, and error avoidance.
- Demonstrates proficiency in conducting, coordinating and publishing research in HealthCare Informatics.
- Expert project or support leadership provided for complex projects; manages high risk projects.
- Establishes and manages multiple priorities.
- Provides effective direction for assigned projects. Anticipates project roadblocks and removes barriers to success. Continually provides work direction for the project team, including: activity scheduling, resource assignment, and work review. Responsible for the appropriateness, applicability, and quality of all work associated with assigned projects.
- Works with client departments to develop project requests in line with the capital and operating budget request processes. Facilitates client and IS team education relative to use of standard IS practices for project initiation and approval. Assists client departments with identifying project costs, quantifying benefits and evaluating alternatives.
- Gains thorough understanding of both the business operation and the application systems. Is able to provide the client departments with functional options that maximize the effectiveness of the computer system.
- Works with analysts, management and client departments to develop and achieve quality targets. Improvement areas should include system stability, cost, appropriateness, IS responsiveness, and other client driven initiatives.
- Provides the highest level of technical and analytical expertise in the application software, tools, and interfaces that support the system. Understands the interaction of systems upon each other, the network, and the computer hardware.
IT Operational Excellence Clinical Informatics Consultants must have many of the following qualifications:
- Bachelors or Masters in Engineering, Computer Science, Informaticists, Nursing, or other healthcare related field
- Outstanding interpersonal and presentations skills, poise, and maturity; can work with all levels of employees, clinicians, and executives
- Strong and proven track record and experience leading information technology projects as a business healthcare and/or technology professional with deep knowledge of the clinical and business side of HIT
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve HIT business process, people and technology related issues
- Comfortable working in a healthcare environment
- Detail oriented and self motivated to learn and deliver quality work
- Ability to self manage work, time, and priorities
- Must be a self starter, take the initiative and have the ability to multi-task
Additionally, top candidates will have:
- 5-7 years healthcare knowledge and/or experience
- Excellent leadership, decision-making and people management skills

The CIC role fosters a productive forty hour work but the candidate must be flexible to adapt to current engagements and requirements.
